Among the ways that MEMPAZ imagined bringing memories in from the margins was to connect with Colombia’s truth commission and with educators in the country. At the beginning of our project, the truth commission was in the process of clarifying historical facts about and responsibilities for decades of conflict and working towards its goal of making truth a public good in Colombia. MEMPAZ’s partner, Rodeemos el Dialogo (ReD), joined this effort developing a teacher training programme to engage students in the truth commission’s methodology and goals and to learn about its findings.

In this interactive hybrid session, ReD will share activities from this programme, exploring pedagogies for teaching and learning about conflict, transitional justice and truth. They will discuss how they worked with teachers in different parts of the country and reflect on the challenges, opportunities and learning from this work, with a special focus on work in Nariño, an area very affected by violence.

Discussion will be facilitated using ReD’s desayuno de paz (peace breakfast) format – so come with room for arepas and hot chocolate – enabling reflection about the wider pedagogical work of MEMPAZ, possibilities for working with memories in classrooms, and connections to teaching about violent pasts beyond Colombia.

This event is one of the BRINGING MEMORIES FROM THE MARGINS events organised by MEMPAZ which are taking place during the week commencing on 20th March.   You can learn more about these events here
